Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers

Traditionally, (since the mid 1700's) the role of the ship broker was straightforward to understand, they were the intermediaries in the chartering of ships. They met and fixed business where the cargoes were controlled - principally London - communications were basic so they would meet at the "Virginia and Baltick Coffee-House" which later led to the establishment of the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange. The broker would also look after ships whilst they were in port and occasionally become involved in ship sale and purchase negotiations.

Today, the career of Ship broking covers the many sectors of the industry, including; dry cargo chartering, tanker chartering, sale and purchase of ships, liner agency, port agency and ship management.

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) is the only internationally recognised professional body representing shipbrokers, managers and agents throughout the world.

Membership of ICS is achieved by passing the Institute's exams and working for a period of time in the industry.

Applying for Membership:
To be eligible for election as an individual Member a person shall comply with the following conditions:

  • shall be not less than twenty-one years of age:
  • shall have been engaged in the business or profession of a shipbroker or in a business having a bona fide connection with the profession of ship broking in the United Kingdom or elsewhere for a period or periods aggregating at least four years either as a principal or employee and shall be so engaged at the time of application for election, provided that if the Controlling Council shall so determine three years may be accepted in the place of four years in the case of any candidate who has served such three years in a firm or company under any Fellow or Fellows;
  • he/she shall have passed the Qualifying Examinations of the Institute, or submitted an acceptable Dissertation in lieu thereof, unless exempted there from under these Bye-Laws; and
  • shall have satisfied the Controlling Council that he or she is a fit and proper person to become a Member;
  • upon successful election and payment of the appropriate fee, the candidate will receive a certificate stating that he or she is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and will thereafter be able to add the initials MICS after his or her name. The certificate at all times remains the property of the Institute and has to be returned if for any reason the person ceases to be a Member (at which time the right to be called a Member will cease).
